Lilly Grants are two-year residential fellowships for teacher-researchers who seek to renew and enrich their intellectual and spiritual life while preparing for leadership roles in church-related institutions of higher education. Each academic year, three fellows are appointed for two years. Fellows are selected from candidates who show an interest in the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation and are considering a career in the church-related colleges or universities. Fellows are in residence at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.
Lilly Fellows join a community of Christian scholars teacher-through:
* Experience teaching in five to seven courses over two years in appropriate departments and Christ College (Honors College) at the University of Valparaíso
* Tutoring in the course of two years by a member of senior faculty from the discipline of scholarship or the College of Christ
* Participation in weekly meetings of a two-year seminar program led by senior fellows at the University of Valparaíso
* Research opportunities for academic or creative work in the field of scholarship and the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation
* Opportunities to develop contacts with selected representatives of the National Network Program of the Church-related Colleges and Universities
* Assist in the second year with plans for post-doctoral education and placement
Eligibility, Nomination and Remuneration
Lilly Fellows are appointed for two years at a level equivalent to that of instructor. The starting salary for 2011-2013 is $ 45,000 more standard features, motion compensation, and an annual professional travel allowance. Fellows are expected to reside in the country throughout the period of two years of their appointment.
Lilly Scholarship Competition is open to anyone interested in the relationship between Christianity and the academic vocation and to consider a career in a Church-related college or university. Research topics or theses are not limited to religion.
For appointments from academic year 2011-2013, an applicant must have earned a PhD, DMA, DFA, MFA, or equivalent degree no earlier than December 2009. The degree must be completed by August 2011.
The fellows will be selected from among the following disciplines: art and art history, creative writing, history, interdisciplinary studies, languages and literature, music and music history, philosophy, religion, rhetoric, theater history and theater. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their interest in the goals of the Lilly Fellows Program and a sense of commitment to explore teaching as a Christian vocation.
